The Marsh Originals produced a good batting performance at home to Cairns Fudge in an important “6 pointer” on Saturday, to set up victory having been inserted on an excellent wicket.

Joe and Spud started up well, with Spud showing excellent grit and determination up front, whilst Joe stroked some early boundaries to set things up, supported by incoming Scotty, who having survived some spilled chances, smashed the ball around to reach a well deserved and entertaining 56. Watch out for this young man, who has a great future at the club! Stu chipped in with 53, whilst Sammy smashed some lovely sixes at the other end as all those in the top six contributed. Stevie T (30*) finished the innings strongly as Gibbon reached 249-6 from their 45.

Tea was a spectacular affair as always, with the chicken and stuffing baps a particularly pleasant addition, supported strongly by a lovely array of home-baked options. The current trend of an additional plateful being stored in the changing room for after the game still going strong…..I’ll let you guess the culprits!

Despite the decent total, Fudge got off to a good start as Kyle struggled to find his usual control and consistency…….virtual golf can take it out of a man of his age! Crouchy (4-58) chipped in with a couple of early breakthroughs to settle things (good to have you back Crouch) as Sam backed up his decent performance with the ball the previous week from the other end. Joe, tired from dragging his bottom lip around the mid-wicket boundary made things interesting with his few overs as Kyle returned to pick up some scalps, including a swift stumping using the standard legside theory,  as Fudge built strongly towards the middle of the innings to make the game very interesting going into the final stages. As Fudge hit strongly needing boundaries, the clock was well and truly turned back in time as all round Gibbon legend Jules turned his arm over for an over, much to the surprise of son and heir Jacob! Gibbon wrapped things up to secure a decent win by 54 runs.

Special mention must go to young Jacob Chambers, who fielded fantastically throughout the whole innings and also provided some decent banter of his old mans bowling…..good lad!

An all important win, with four games to go and the relegation dogfight well and truly on.

More of the same please as we entertain Wantage on Saturday. Well done chaps.
